Student Loans

Financial aid student loans are not considered unsecured debt. However, loans taken from private lenders in order to pay for school are. Generally, school loans are “good debt” in that they are loans for something you need that you otherwise couldn’t afford. Going to a private lender or multiple lenders can create many loans with high interest rates. Even worse, many people pay for school with their credit card, resulting in high credit card debt.

Government Student Loans carry the lowest interest rates when it comes to borrowing money for school. And many do not require you to pay any interest until you have finished your program plus several months. Check into your local laws pertaining to this. Students seeking government loans must meet certain standards set up by the government, including proof that you actually need the loan in order to go to school and acceptance of the student by the college into your educational program.  If you feel you would not be a good candidate for such a loan, you may consider going private for a student loan. The truth is too that when it comes to getting a student loan, even private lenders are often more flexible in order for a student to get a low interest rate. I would recommend that you discuss all your options with a student loan counselor at your school. Be aware that many people I knew going through school, would obtain a student loan and foolishly spend it all only to find themselves in trouble later. Obviously do not forget to spend it wisely and realize you have to pay it back later. If however, at the end of your studies you find yourself in a bit of repayment difficulties, you can apply for student loan consolidation to help you manage paying it off.
